In 1987 I visited a friend of mine in El Paso. He lived next to the border with Mexico, and on one day, we walked down the fence, to a hillside that had eroded, and the fence had been partially covered with dirt and sand. You could climb up and sit on the top. The mountains cowered in the distance, lost in the backwash haze, and the sand stretched out, empty and still. Over the hill the lights of the city blinked after sunset, on both sides of the fence. I remember at one point before we left, I sat there, and he mentioned how you could hear gunfire from there if you listen. "I thought they were fireworks", I said. What I remember the most, is that it was coming from the north side of the fence.
