In 2011, shortly after coming to Japan to live, I played a show at Bullet's in the Roppongi area of Tokyo. The show was centered around the Tokyo Phonographers Union, and included a large collaboration of artist who played primarily field recordings, as was the focus of the collective. However, for my solo show, I played part of a piece I had made a few months earlier when I was living in Nagano, near Lake Suwa. It was not really related to field recordings or phonography at all, and looking back I have no idea why I decided to play this, for this particular show.
Despite this, it seemed to fit with the basement, dive bar air of the old venue, that was a famous ambient club from decades before. I played only a laptop, making super small adjustments to the EQ and frequency input, sitting level with it on the floor.
After the show, a friend (a member of the Phonographers Union) came up and said that he had known my music for a long time, but that now after seeing my show, he understood my music. I still today have no idea what he meant, nor do I understand it myself, but maybe that's ok, too.
